July 4 is the deadline President Donald Trump has set for the Senate to send him his massive tax and immigration package, the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
The House narrowly passed the measure by one vote on May 22, and now Senate Republicans face a four-week sprint to reconcile differences before Independence Day.
Trump has publicly vowed there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid — even as the bill expands Medicaid work requirements and threatens coverage for millions of seniors and people with disabilities.
On Monday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Republican senators are working at warp speed to align with the House version, despite a fragile majority and sharp disagreements over deep spending cuts versus preserving popular programs.
Now, conservative holdouts such as Sens. Josh Hawley and Susan Collins worry rural hospitals will suffer under provider tax limits, while others fear cuts to clean energy tax credits could derail economic growth in their states.
