Remembering Ida B. Wells and Assata Shakur

On this day in 1862, Ida B. Wells was born enslaved in Holly Springs, Mississippi.

She became a pioneering journalist, educator, and fearless anti-lynching crusader.

A co-founder of the NAACP, Wells helped shape investigative journalism and fight for Black civil rights. She died in 1931 at the age of 68.

Also born on this day in 1947 was Assata Shakur, a Black Panther and Black Liberation Army activist. Convicted in the 1973 killing of a New Jersey state trooper, she maintained her innocence, escaped prison in 1979, and received asylum in Cuba.
