(AURN News) – Secretary of State Marco Rubio brought together diplomats from more than 60 countries in Washington Thursday for a summit almost entirely focused on what they see as left-wing political violence, with no parallel session addressing far-right extremism. Rubio argued that far-left ideology inevitably curdles into authoritarianism, repression and its enemies.
The gathering builds on Trump’s May counterterrorism strategy, which singles out anarchist and anti-fascist groups as a major threat while leaving right-wing violence unmentioned.
Civil rights groups, including the ACLU, are raising red flags, warning these labels could end up targeting — and have targeted — peaceful protesters and political rivals instead of actual security threats.
That concern isn’t coming from nowhere. This is the same administration that pardoned January 6th defendants convicted of attacking police officers.
