San Francisco Board Apologizes to African Americans, Recommends Reparations Amid National Debate

San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors issued a formal apology to African Americans and their descendants for the city’s history of racism and discrimination, acknowledging systemic injustices and targeted violence.

This marks the first reparations recommendation out of over 100 proposals, suggesting a $5 million lump-sum payment and a substantial yearly income for eligible Black adults to address the city’s racial wealth disparities.

However, Mayor London Breed advocates for national-level reparations, and while San Francisco’s apology aligns with similar actions by other cities and states, concrete steps toward reparations remain pending.

Nine states have also formally apologized for slavery, according to the resolution.
