SCOTUS Set To Decide on Affirmative Action, Student Debt Relief, First Amendment Case and More

The Supreme Court is set to hand down key decisions this morning. They could address student debt relief, affirmative action, and federal election laws. The court is entering its last week of the summer session with 10 cases pending.

They include a case over First Amendment rights versus LGBTQ rights out of Colorado, where a web designer argues a state law requiring her to serve LGBTQ customers violates her religious beliefs.

The Supreme Court is hearing the case Monday, Dec. 5, of Smith, a Christian graphic artist who objects to designing wedding websites for gay couples, a dispute that’s the latest clash of religion and gay rights to land at the highest court. Justices could announce at any time whether they will take up several high-profile cases, including racial discrimination, guns, and qualified immunity.

The court has already ruled on redistricting, this time involving a lawsuit filed in Louisiana where opponents of the Republican-drawn congressional boundaries say that they were unfair and there should be a second Black-majority district. The high court shot down Louisiana’s appeal. Justices kicked the case back to the lower courts so the maps can be drawn in advance of the 2024 congressional election.
