Shutdown Showdown: Jeffries Draws a Line on ICE

(AURN News) — “This is day five of the Trump-Republican shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, meaning they’ve chosen to shut down the Coast Guard, shut down FEMA and shut down TSA, rather than dramatically reform ICE. Donald Trump spent the weekend on the golf course with Ron DeSantis, and so we’ve not seen any high-level effort,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.

Jeffries made the remarks at the Capitol, accusing Republicans of allowing FEMA, TSA and the Coast Guard to stall rather than agree to major changes at Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Jeffries said Democrats want judicial warrants before ICE enters private property, independent investigations into alleged misconduct, body cameras on agents and a ban on enforcement actions in schools, hospitals, houses of worship and polling sites.

He also called for an end to racial and language profiling and called for DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to resign.
