According to the Associated Press, Smokey Robinson has filed a defamation lawsuit against four former housekeepers who accused him of rape in incidents spanning 2007 to 2024.
The 85-year-old Motown legend and his wife, Frances Robinson, filed the counterclaim in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging the women fabricated their claims as part of an extortion scheme.
The women are suing for $50 million, alleging Robinson repeatedly raped them and that Frances enabled the abuse.
The Robinsons deny the allegations and have submitted photos, text messages and other evidence of what they describe as a long, friendly relationship.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed an ongoing criminal investigation. Attorneys for the women say the lawsuit is a retaliatory attempt to silence survivors.
