SNAP Cuts Loom After Shutdown Ends

(AURN News) — The federal government may have reopened, but the real pain for millions of Americans could just be beginning. After the 43-day shutdown, food stamp benefits are flowing again — but a wave of new cuts is about to hit.
The nation’s largest anti-hunger program is facing sweeping changes under a new Republican-backed tax and spending law championed by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. The measure is expected to remove millions from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, permanently.
The law brings some of the deepest cuts to the social safety net in decades, even as families watch their paychecks shrink against rising prices. Nearly 42 million people rely on SNAP, and more than 40% of them are children. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, stricter work requirements are now taking effect. Parents, older Americans, legal immigrants and refugees will have to meet tougher rules or risk losing their benefits entirely.
Some states are already warning participants: comply within three months or face removal from the program.
