State official takes on debanking for political reasons

Alabama State Auditor Andrew Sorrell is helping lead the fight against debanking, a practice where Americans are kicked out of their banks, sometimes for their political views.

Sorrell told The Center Square that he was debanked for owning gun stores and that the practice is happening around the country. Even members of the Trump family have claimed they were debanked and filed a lawsuit as a result.

Now, state and federal legislation is advancing to curtail the practice, which critics say is discrimination. Banks generally deny politically motivated debanking is occurring, but the debanked say otherwise.
