(AURN News) — The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Wednesday to allow the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for more than 350,000 Haitians and more than 6,000 Syrians living and working legally in the United States.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund condemned the decision, arguing the court ignored equal protection principles in a case it said was rooted in anti-Black and anti-brown immigration bias.
AURN News spoke with Firmin Backer, president and co-founder of the Haiti Renewal Alliance:
“Nearly 300,000 people are subject to deportation to a country that is not in condition to receive them. People who have lived in this country for decades, that have called this country their home, that have contributed greatly to the economy. Doctors, nurses, engineers, caregiver. It’s a bad decision, not just for the Haitian community, but for humanity as well. We are asking Congress to act and to act swiftly.”
