Swalwell Resigns Amid Drugging, Rape Allegations

(AURN News) — Former Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., has resigned from Congress following allegations of sexual assault.

“I believe he drugged my drink. I only had one glass of wine. He raped me,” said Lonna Drewes, who is accusing him.

Drewes detailed a 2018 encounter she says left her physically powerless and fearing for her life. Speaking publicly for the first time, she said she did not consent and has lived with the trauma for years.

Her attorneys said they are taking the matter to law enforcement, filing a formal report and turning over evidence, including messages and witness information.

Multiple other women have come forward since the allegations became public.

Swalwell has denied the allegations and has resigned from Congress ahead of a possible expulsion effort, as pressure mounted across Capitol Hill.

Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, has also stepped down amid his own misconduct controversy.
