The Autobiography of Malcolm X: 60 Years of Legacy and Liberation

On this day 60 years ago, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” was published — a landmark book that continues to shape conversations about race, power, and identity. Written by Muslim American minister and activist Malcolm X in collaboration with journalist Alex Haley, the memoir was released Oct. 29, 1965 — nine months after Malcolm’s assassination. The book chronicles his transformation from a hustler known as “Detroit Red” to one of the most influential voices of the civil rights movement. Through vivid storytelling and brutal honesty, Malcolm X exposed the realities of racism in America while charting his own spiritual and political awakening. Decades later, the autobiography remains an essential text on resistance, self-determination and the struggle for Black liberation.
