This Day in History: E. Lynn Harris, Trailblazing Author and Voice for Black Gay Men, Dies in 2009

On July 23, 2009, the literary world mourned the loss of Everette “E” Lynn Harris, a New York Times bestselling author whose groundbreaking work gave voice to the experiences of Black gay men.

Harris, known for his compelling storytelling and candid exploration of complex social issues, broke new ground with his debut novel, “Invisible Life,” which was first self-published in 1991.

His vivid portrayals of love, identity, and resilience resonated with readers and critics alike, earning him a dedicated following and significant commercial success.

Throughout his career, Harris penned 11 novels, with 10 making the New York Times bestseller list, and he was celebrated not only for his literary achievements but also for his contributions to diversity and representation in contemporary fiction.

E. Lynn Harris passed away at 54 years old.
