Tony Brown, Trailblazing Journalist and TV Host, Dies at 93

(AURN News) — Tony Brown, the longtime host and producer of “Tony Brown’s Journal,” died June 17 at his home in Newport News, Virginia, according to The New York Times. He was 93.

His death was attributed to coronary heart disease.

Brown’s television career included “Black Journal,” “Colored People’s Time” and the PBS program that became “Tony Brown’s Journal” in 1977.

The show focused on Black audiences and covered race, politics, media, culture and public life.

Brown interviewed more than 1,000 guests, including Lena Horne, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Angela Davis, Sammy Davis Jr. and Bill Cosby.

He said he made programming decisions by asking whether the work would help Black people.

Brown also served as the first dean of Howard University’s School of Communications, wrote a syndicated column and hosted a radio show.

“Tony Brown’s Journal” ended in 2008.
