Trump Administration Scrambles to Rehire Federal Workers After Cuts

(AURN News) — After cutting large portions of the federal workforce, the Trump administration is now scrambling to hire back workers it pushed out.

More than 387,000 federal workers have left since Trump returned to office, while about 123,000 have been hired, leaving major gaps across the federal government.

In the fallout, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency lost nearly 40% of its workforce, and Social Security staff were pulled from policy and IT work to answer phones.

At the Department of Veterans Affairs, job applications are down 50%, even as veterans still need nurses and specialists.

The impact is especially significant for Black workers. Black employees make up about 19% of the federal workforce, making the cuts a direct hit to one of the country’s most reliable pathways to the middle class.

Now the administration is rehiring, but under new Schedule Policy/Career rules that could move roughly 50,000 positions into a category with weaker job protections and greater White House control.
