Trump Claims Civil Rights Laws Harmed White People

According to The New York Times, President Donald Trump said in an interview that civil rights-era protections led to white people being “very badly treated,” openly embracing the idea of “reverse discrimination” as a driving force behind his administration’s racial policies.

Asked whether the Civil Rights Act and affirmative action harmed white men, Trump said, “White people were very badly treated,” claiming some were “not invited to go into a university or college” and were denied jobs they “deserve[d].”

While acknowledging that civil rights laws “accomplished some very wonderful things,” he insisted they were also “unfair in certain cases.”

Civil rights leaders sharply rejected the claim. NAACP President Derrick Johnson said there is “no evidence” that white men were discriminated against by the civil rights movement, noting it was designed to address generations of racial exclusion, not create new victims.
