(AURN News) — The Trump Justice Department’s turning up the heat on election officials nationwide.
This week, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, sent letters to top election officers in all 50 states and D.C., warning they could face criminal prosecution if noncitizens are found on their voter rolls or cast ballots in federal elections.
States now have just five days to respond and explain how they’re complying.
Several officials are pushing back hard. Arizona’s secretary of state called the accusation insulting to his staff. Utah’s lieutenant governor, a Republican, called the letter “truly bizarre” coming from an agency meant to protect civil rights.
Research and state audits, including in red states, consistently show noncitizen voting is extremely rare, and the DOJ has already lost more than a dozen court battles trying to force states to hand over private voter data.
