(AURN News) — President Donald Trump issued a proclamation this week marking Black History Month. The action comes as his administration continues to remove references to Black history across the federal government and takes steps to dismantle diversity initiatives.
“I proclaim that ‘Black history’ is not distinct from American history — rather, the history of Black Americans is an indispensable chapter in our grand American story,” Trump said.
“My Administration will never stop working to ensure that our country and every future generation of American citizens remain guided by the same truth: We are one Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” Trump said.
The proclamation comes amid questions about mixed messages from the White House. The Trump administration removed Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth from the National Park Service list of fee-free holidays, ending a policy that allowed free access to national parks on those days.
The administration said the change is part of a broader effort to ensure what it calls fair access for taxpayers and to reduce the number of fee-free days across the park system. At the same time, Trump added his own birthday, June 14, to the National Park Service calendar as a fee-free day.
Trump has also continued to scale back or remove references to Black history across parts of the federal government. Critics say those efforts downplay the experiences of Black Americans and the role race has played in shaping the nation.
Several federal agencies have already moved to end or reduce observances tied to Black history. The Defense Intelligence Agency ended its celebration of Black History Month in 2025, at the start of Trump’s second term.
