WASHINGTON (AURN News) — President Donald Trump has removed the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. It is the bipartisan federal agency created after the 2000 election to help states run safe, accurate and accessible elections.
The EAC does not count votes or run elections, but it plays a key role behind the scenes, helping certify voting systems, distributing election security grants, supporting local election officials and maintaining the national mail voter registration form.
Trump removed two Democratic commissioners, Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland, while Republican Commissioner Christy McCormick resigned, leaving the commission without any Senate-confirmed members.
This comes months before the midterm elections as the administration pushes for tighter federal control over voter registration, including proof of citizenship requirements.
When election systems are disrupted, voters often face confusion, voter roll purges, long lines and barriers to registration.
