Trump Settlement Creates $1.776 Billion Taxpayer-Funded Fund

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — President Donald Trump dropped his lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns, but minutes later his Justice Department announced a nearly $2 billion taxpayer-funded settlement fund tied to the case.

Trump sued a government agency his administration controls. His own appointees at the Justice Department later settled the case. Now, there is a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” created without a vote in Congress that will pay claims from people who say they were unfairly targeted.

A federal judge has already raised questions about whether a president can sue his own government. Democrats call it an “illegal slush fund.”

Constitutional scholars say it may violate the separation of powers and constitutional restrictions barring presidents from profiting from the government they run.
