Trump Threatens to Take Over DC Police … Again

(AURN News) — Could Washington, D.C., once again lose control of its own police force? President Donald Trump is threatening to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department after Mayor Muriel Bowser, D-D.C., said the city will not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Trump’s last emergency order expired days ago. That order had already placed D.C.’s police under his command for 30 days. During that period, more than 40% of arrests were immigration-related, underscoring how his crackdown shifted the city’s law enforcement priorities.

While the president says his surge cut crime, data shows crime was already declining. Bowser, standing firm, said, “Immigration enforcement is not what the MPD does. And with the end of the emergency, it won’t be what MPD does in the future.”

Trump now says he may call a national emergency and federalize if necessary. Meanwhile, Congress is weighing new bills that would strip even more of D.C.’s Home Rule, including proposals to lower the age for juveniles to be tried as adults and to tighten sentencing laws.
