Tuberville’s Turnabout: From Stubbornville to Approvalville, Military Holds Lifted

Many are saying it’s about time. Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama has finally lifted the hold on the confirmation of hundreds of military promotions. The actions, announced Tuesday, allowed the Senate to rapidly confirm military nominations by voice.

This saga has been going on for 10 months now. The Alabama Senator, in protest against a Defense Department reproductive rights policy, stalled nearly 450 military nominees and was facing growing backlash from both sides of the aisle.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer described Tuberville’s hold as damaging to military readiness and because military promotions were on hold, it was causing financial issues and impacting military families.

Tuberville acknowledged the pressure but said he had no choice, claiming that he actually helped to bolster national security. He did, however, keep his hold on fewer than a dozen four-star promotions.
