Tulsa Survivor Mother Fletcher Dies at 111

(AURN News) – Viola Ford Fletcher, known as Mother Fletcher and the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, has died at 111. She died Monday, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and power.

Born in 1914, she was just 7 when a white mob devastated Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood, known as Black Wall Street, a thriving Black community of homes, churches and businesses.

Despite losing everything, Fletcher spent her later years seeking justice, testifying before Congress and joining a lawsuit against the city of Tulsa over the destruction of Greenwood.

Attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons, who represented Fletcher, called her death a moral loss for the city and the nation.Fletcher’s fellow survivor, Lessie Benningfield Randle, also 111, is now the last known living witness to that horrific chapter in American history.
