White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting Suspect Charged With Attempted Assassination

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — A federal judge heard the case against Cole Tomas Allen, who is now charged with attempting to assassinate the president, transporting firearms across state lines with intent to commit a felony and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

Dressed in a blue prison suit, he appeared before Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh just 48 hours after authorities say he tried to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol and three knives.

Authorities say he boarded a train in Los Angeles four days before the attack, arriving in Washington, D.C., the night before the dinner. He checked into the Washington Hilton, the same hotel hosting the event, and waited.

At 8:40 p.m. Saturday night, minutes before he moved in on the checkpoint, he sent an email to friends and family. His sister contacted law enforcement, warning that her brother had been talking about taking matters into his own hands to “fix the world’s problems.”
