White House Leads Charge Against Rental Housing Junk Fees

The White House is cracking down on rental housing junk fees in an effort to increase transparency and lower costs for renters, which can average $100 or more.

Major rental housing platforms like Zillow, Apartments.com, and AffordableHousing.com have pledged to provide consumers with total, upfront cost information on rental properties, enabling renters to make informed decisions without being surprised by additional fees.

New research from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) outlines strategies to address rental housing junk fees nationwide, while states like Connecticut and California are taking legislative action to protect consumers from unfair fees.

President Biden’s proposals look to ensure honest pricing, support renters, and promote a fairer rental housing market.
