(AURN News) — Could the U.S. be heading toward another government shutdown? Democrats say yes, unless health care is on the table.
Democrats are demanding an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits, which expire at the end of this year. Without them, premiums could rise by about 75% — a cost millions of Americans cannot afford.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., say Republicans are gutting health care through cuts to Medicaid and refusal to extend those credits. But Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., say Democrats just want a fight with the Trump administration.
President Donald Trump brushed off their demands. “Here is the problem. The Democrats have — they’re sick. There is something wrong with them. Schumer is at the end of the rope,” he said.
Government funding runs out Sept. 30. A stopgap deal is possible, but both sides are digging in, and Democrats insist they will not back down this time.
