Will President Biden’s Visit to Israel Offer a Ray of Hope in the Middle East?

President Joe Biden will travel to Israel on Wednesday to demonstrate his steadfast support for Israel in the face of Hamas’ brutal attack and to consult on the next steps. He’s then scheduled to travel to Amman, Jordan, where he will meet with Jordanian King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, according to the White House.

The White House says the president will reiterate that Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people’s right to dignity and self-determination, and discuss the humanitarian needs of civilians in Gaza.

President Biden’s visit comes after Hamas militants claimed the lives of over 1,300 people, mostly innocent civilians, marking the deadliest day in Israel’s 75-year history.

President Joe Biden has spent decades as a stalwart supporter of Israel, a connection rooted in dinner table conversations with his father about the Holocaust. In response, Israel initiated a massive airstrike campaign affecting over 2,800 Palestinians, a quarter of whom were children. The blockade on Gaza has led to dwindling supplies of food, fuel, and medical aid.

As tensions escalate, the question is, can diplomacy and humanitarian efforts alleviate the ongoing crisis, and what needs to happen next?
