The Department of Justice is recommending just one day in jail — time already served — for former Louisville detective Brett Hankison, the only officer convicted in connection to the 2020 police raid that left Breonna Taylor dead.
In a 19-page sentencing memo filed in federal court, DOJ attorneys acknowledged that Hankison fired 10 rounds blindly into Taylor’s apartment through covered doors and windows after one officer was shot during the raid.
His bullets didn’t strike anyone, but they tore through walls into a neighbor’s apartment, missing a sleeping baby by just two feet.
Still, prosecutors are asking for no prison time, citing extreme provocation from Taylor’s boyfriend.
They also note that Hankison was ultimately convicted on just one count across several trials and is unlikely to ever work in law enforcement again.
The twist: the sentencing memo wasn’t signed by the DOJ’s career prosecutors who actually tried the case, but instead came from Trump-era appointees now running the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.
