Americans Lose Faith as Government Shutdown Drags On

(AURN News) — A new Economist/YouGov poll shows that many Americans are uneasy about where the country is heading.

Among white respondents, 55% said the nation is off track. The number climbs to 81% among Black Americans and 61% among Hispanic respondents.

Only a smaller share see things improving — 37% of white Americans, 11% of Black Americans, and 26% of Hispanic Americans said the country is moving in the right direction.

The survey also asked about the government shutdown: 43% of Black Americans said they expect to be affected somewhat. About one in four white respondents and just under three in 10 Hispanic respondents said the same.

Most respondents said they weren’t satisfied with how President Donald Trump handled the shutdown. About 54% said they disapprove of his approach, and roughly one in three said they approve.

Democrats in Congress didn’t gain much favor either. Around half of those polled said they’re unhappy with how Democrats have handled things, while 26% said they approve.

Roughly the same pattern showed up for Republicans. A little more than half of respondents — about 53% — said they’re unhappy with how their party has dealt with the shutdown. Around three in 10 said they back the approach.

The Economist/YouGov poll surveyed 1,648 adults nationwide between Oct. 4 and 6. Of those surveyed, 1,490 were registered voters.
