Arizona governor expands COVID-19 vaccine eligibility

(The Center Square) – Just about everyone in Arizona can now get an updated COVID-19 vaccine.

In August, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccine, but restricted eligibility to those 65 and older and those at higher risk of infection. But a new executive order from Gov. Katie Hobbs guarantees access to the shot for everybody 6 months and older. The Democrat directed the Arizona Department of Health Services to expand the eligibility list.

“The health and safety of Arizonans are my top priority. That’s why I took action to expand access to COVID-19 vaccines and give Arizonans who want one the ability to get one,” Hobbs said in a news release.

The vaccine is available for children aged 6 months through 6 years through health care providers. After that age, it’s also available at pharmacies, although not necessarily all pharmacies. The governor’s executive order also doesn’t guarantee that the vaccine is covered by insurance, according to Hobbs’ office.

The vaccine has been proven to be safe and effective, said Dr. Richard Carmona, the ADHS medical adviser and a former U.S. surgeon general.

“We understand the federal changes have caused confusion about eligibility for vaccination,” said ADHS Interim Director Sheila Sjolander. “We are committed to keeping the public updated on our recommendations throughout this respiratory season.”
