Assata Shakur, Political Fugitive Convicted in 1973 Trooper Murder, Dies in Cuba at 78

Assata Shakur, the former Black Liberation Army member convicted in the 1973 murder of a New Jersey state trooper, has died in Cuba at 78, ABC News reported.

Shakur was sentenced to life in prison but always maintained her innocence. She escaped in 1979 with the help of armed accomplices and fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum.

Her conviction and escape kept her on the New Jersey State Police’s Most Wanted List for decades, and the FBI offered a $2 million reward for her capture. Despite repeated extradition requests from U.S. officials, Cuba refused to return her.

Cuban authorities said she died in Havana of health complications and old age.
