Atlanta picked as Rivian’s East Coast headquarters

(The Center Square) – Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian will make Atlanta its East Coast home, the company said Thursday.

Rivian plans to move into the top floor of the Portman Holdings’ Junction Krog District building near the Eastside Beltline Trail.

The company will add 100 new jobs at the office when it opens sometime before the end of 2025, the company said. The headquarters will employ 500 people once it is fully completed.

“Atlanta embodies so much that makes Georgia great – top talent, exceptional creativity, and a desire to always be moving forward,” said founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe.

“Georgia is a prime location for any company headquarters, and we’re glad to see Rivian will soon join the growing list of brands not only operating in our state but also wholly or partially based in our capital city,” Gov. Brian Kemp said. “They recognize the unmatched value of Georgia’s talent and the location of their East Coast headquarters in Atlanta is the latest demonstration of their commitment to the Peach State.”

The announcement is a reflection on the city, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said.

“Atlanta continues to lead in EV innovation and technology integration, and Rivian’s growing presence here reinforces our city’s role in shaping our future economy,” Dickens said. “The opening of this new office and event space reflects how Atlanta continues to engage the community in bold, creative ways.”

The investment is separate from an electric vehicle plant in Social Circle. The company received a $6 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy in November for the plant.

Plans for the plant were put on hold in March amidst controversy about the $1.5 billion in incentives Georgia said it would give Rivian when it was announced in December 2021, according to previous reports. The plant has been projected to 7,500 jobs.

The Michigan-based Center for Economic Accountability called the project the “Worst Economic Development Deal of the Year” for 2022.
