Baton Rouge to vote on crime prevention props, new judges during election

(The Center Square) – East Baton Rouge Parish residents will vote in a new City Court judge and District Court judge, as well as several propositions, on Saturday.

Early voting concluded this past Saturday.

Dele Adebamiji, Elzie Alford, Jr., Vicky Jones and Vernon Thomas are the Democratic candidates running for District Judge at the 19th Judicial District Court.

Calli Boudreaux and Brenden Craig are the Republican candidates are running for the City Judge seat in City Court.

Apart from the two judge seats, a crime prevention proposition is also up for a vote for the Concord Estates Crime Prevention District. The measure is proposing the authorization to levy and collect an annual parcel fee of $69.50 on each household in the District.

This means that, if approved by voters, each household would pay $69.50 per year to help with crime prevention in the district. The fee would last for six years, starting in 2026, and generate roughly $20,000 annually.

Concord Estates is not the only neighborhood seeking crime prevention assistance.

The Southern Heights neighborhood is seeking a fee of no more than $100 per household to help prevent crime. If approved by voters, the fee begins in 2026 and continues until 2035. While it cannot exceed $100, the proposition does include the ability to increase the fee once after five years, but it cannot exceed $150 when increased. The fee would generate $51,800 annually.

The final proposition on the ballot concerns the Downtown Development District, but it is a renewal as opposed to a new property tax inside the district for another five years. The property tax renewal of 10 mills is expected to generate $741,390 a year if approved. The revenue from the tax will go towards improving parks, sidewalks, lighting and other areas within the district.

There is one unopposed race on the ballot for the District 1 seat on the school board, with Democratic candidate Tracey Johnson Taylor-Jarrell running.
