Boulder, Colorado school district faces decline in post-pandemic enrollment

(The Center Square)- The Boulder Valley School District has seen a continued decline in student enrollment since reaching its peak of over 30,000 students before the pandemic.

That’s according to the 2024-25 proposed budget book the school board received at its May 28 board of education meeting.

Student enrollment went from 30,302 in 2019-20 to 26,866 for the 2024-25 projected enrollment, lower than the projected number the school submitted in 2023-24, according to the proposed budget book.

The district stated that student enrollment drives school funding in Colorado. The district’s total revenues have increased from $469.8 million in 2019 to $571.2 million in 2023, according to an audited report.

Boulder Valley School District is made up of 56 schools across Boulder, Gold Hill, Jamestown, Lafayette, Louisville, Nederland, Superior, and some Broomfield and Erie areas.

The decline in student enrollment mirrors that of the state since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Colorado Department of Education website.

The state had 913,223 students in 2019, the most going back to at least 2010. But it has dropped off during the pandemic and hit 881,864 in 2023.

The school district didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.
