Burkina Faso Parliament Passes Law Criminalizing LGBTQ Practices

Burkina Faso’s transitional parliament has passed legislation criminalizing conduct deemed to promote LGBTQ practices, CNN reported.

The law includes fines, prison terms of two to five years, and deportation for noncitizens convicted of repeat offenses.

The unelected 71-member transitional parliament approved the measure unanimously, and it now awaits the signature of the country’s military leader.

Officials said the measure is part of a broader update to the Persons and Family Code, which also addresses nationality and statelessness.

Human rights advocates are expected to condemn the law as part of a growing wave of anti-LGBTQ measures across Africa.
