(The Center Square) — Updated juvenile numbers for Caddo Parish show detention numbers have remained the same since June 2; however, six additional probation cases were reported.
In Caddo Parish Administrator Erica Bryant’s biweekly administrative report, she reported a total of 17 juveniles in detention. Five are with the Office of Juvenile Justice, 24 at Caddo Correctional Center and 458 probation cases.
During the June 2 administrative report, there were also 17 in detention but fewer probation cases. Five were with the Office of Juvenile Justice, 26 at Caddo Correctional Center and 452 probation cases.
Despite this change, there are still fewer reported in detention and probation than in the May 19 census numbers when there were 21 in detention, 461 probation cases and 29 at the Caddo Correctional Center, 21 of whom were 17 years old.
Overall, juvenile numbers have fluctuated up and down since the start of the year. Bryant reported on January 6 that there were 13 juveniles in detention, 22 at the Caddo Correctional Center and 472 probation cases. This number jumped by January 20 to 20 in detention, three with the Office of Juvenile Justice and 460 probation cases.
Over the last six months, the parish has seen both increases and decreases in reported numbers, with a spike in detention numbers in May as school ended.
Parish officials are constantly looking for ways to decrease juvenile crime numbers. After Bryant reported the Caddo Correctional Center was nearing max capacity, the conversation arose about additional funding and resources needed.
Previously, the Caddo Correctional Center had 1,493 inmates, only seven from its max capacity of 1,500.
Additional funding for the parish’s juvenile justice system is in the near future, though as the Caddo Commission recently voted in favor of adjusted millage rates, which will bring in additional funding for juvenile court and juvenile detention home facilities.
