Carter begins his final trip to Washington today

(The Center Square) – Former president Jimmy Carter’s body will begin lying in state at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday afternoon after thousands of mourners paid their respects in his home state.

The Carter Center said more than 23,000 visitors paid their respects since Sunday.

His casket is arriving in Washington on Tuesday afternoon 90 minutes later than originally scheduled, according to the schedule from the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region and The U.S. Army Military District of Washington. The delay is due to a snowstorm that has blanked the area.

Members of Congress and other dignitaries will begin paying their respects at 4:30 p.m. Senate Leader John Thune, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Vice President Kamala Harris will speak and lay wreaths.

The former president will lie in state between 7 p.m. and midnight and all day Wednesday.

The casket will be moved to the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday morning. The state funeral will begin at 10 a.m.

Carter’s body will then go back to his hometown of Plains. A private ceremony will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church, followed by a private interment at Carter’s residence, according to the Carter Center. The U.S. Navy will do the Missing Man formation during Carter’s journey from the church to his gravesite.

Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. He is the only U.S. president to live to be 100.
