CBS Report: ICE Arrests Rarely Target Violent Immigrants

(AURN News) — A new CBS report found that less than 14% of nearly 400,000 immigrants arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement during President Donald Trump’s first year back in office had violent criminal records, according to an internal Homeland Security document. The data undercut repeated claims from the Trump administration that its aggressive deportation drive is focused on what it calls the “worst of the worst.”

Nearly 40% of those taken into ICE custody over the past year had no criminal record. They were picked up only for civil immigration violations such as overstaying a visa or living in the U.S. without authorization.

The CBS analysis also found that while ICE has dramatically ramped up arrests and nearly 60% of those arrested had some kind of criminal charge or conviction, the vast majority were not for violent offenses. Less than 2% of all arrests involved people with homicide or sexual assault charges.
