CDC Director Fired After Clash With Trump Administration

Another shakeup has hit the administration — this time at the nation’s top public health agency. CDC Director Susan Monarez was abruptly fired after refusing to resign under pressure from the Trump administration.

Her lawyers say she refused to “rubber stamp unscientific, reckless directives” pushed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, who is a vaccine skeptic.

Within hours, at least four senior CDC leaders resigned in protest. They were experts in immunizations, respiratory diseases and infectious outbreaks — people who have led the nation through pandemics and measles flareups.

The firing comes weeks after a gunman attacked CDC headquarters in Atlanta, killing a police officer.

Public health experts warned the departures could leave the country more vulnerable to outbreaks. Former Biden-era CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen said the shakeup was a major setback for public health.
