Census: Arizona still one of the fastest growing states

(The Center Square) – New data shows that Arizona continues to grow rapidly.

The Grand Canyon State ranks fifth in domestic migration from April 2020 to July 2023, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Arizona witnessed a net gain of 218,247, the bureau estimates. The top-ranking state for net domestic migration gains was Florida, followed by Texas and the Carolinas.

On the flip side, Illinois, New York and California all saw massive net losses since the decennial Census. California saw a net domestic migration loss of 1.197 million and New York had a net loss of 882,676.

The population change between 2022 and 2023 was slightly less drastic compared to other states, but Arizona still ranked 13th in the metric. The state gained an estimated 65,660 people, which is a 0.9% increase. The top states for year over year growth were South Carolina, Florida, Texas and Idaho.

The Center Square reported in October that much of the domestic migration from Arizona comes from the neighboring state of California. An estimated 74,157 people from California decided to make the Grand Canyon State their home in 2022, serving as an over 46,000 net gain to Arizona.

Maricopa County is considered the largest growing county in the United States as of 2022, and the economic environment is playing a large role. The Center Square reported that the county recently received recognition for attracting skilled workers. Still, the state as a whole is investing money into apprenticeship programs in order to keep up with the private sector investment in the region.
