(The Center Square)– Tens of thousands of Californians moved to Arizona in 2022, according to new United States Census Bureau data estimates.

An estimated 74,157 people migrated from California to Arizona, which was a net gain to Arizona of 46,745.

Many other states also lost out to Arizona. For example, Washington has a net loss of 14,005 people when it comes to migration between the two states. Nearby Colorado also lost out to Arizona, as there was a net of 4,846 people who decided to move to the Grand Canyon State instead of Colorado.

However, Florida and Texas did have a net gain of Arizona residents. Florida saw 11,901 Arizona residents move to the Sunshine State, whereas only 4,471 people from Florida decided to make Arizona their new home. Meanwhile, Texas had a net gain of 5,230 over Arizona. The trio are considered some of the largest growing states in the country, as the sun belt continues to be an economic boon in the post-pandemic era.

In total, the bureau estimates that 282,729 people came from a different state. When it came to international arrivals to Arizona, 46,799 residents were living abroad prior to coming to the state in 2022. The margin of error for all of the estimates was relatively large in some cases, given that it’s likely hard to determine an exact number.

It’s safe to say that many of the new residents are coming to Maricopa County, which the bureau determined was the “largest-gaining county” in the United States between July 2021 and July 2022. On the flipside, Los Angeles County saw the biggest decline out of any county in the U.S., with over 90,000 leaving.

Besides residents, businesses are also flocking to the Grand Canyon State to establish offices, as there was a 65% net gain, according to Hire A Helper report analyzed by The Center Square in June.
