(The Center Square) – U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat representing Colorado, said he doesn’t think President Joe Biden can win the November election and called his party’s current trajectory to win the White House “very worrisome.”
“Donald Trump is on track I think to win this election, and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House,” Bennet told CNN in an interview Tuesday night.
Bennet confirmed an earlier report by CNN that he was among three Democrats who expressed doubts that Biden could win during a caucus meeting earlier on Tuesday.
“It’s true that I said that and I did say that behind closed doors,” Bennet said in the interview. “[CNN] and others asked whether I said it and that is what I said.”
The other two senators were reportedly Jon Tester of Montana and Sherrod Brown of Ohio.
“This race is on a trajectory that is very worrisome if you care about the future of this country,” said Bennet, who ran for president in 2020. “Joe Biden was nine points up at this time the last time he was running. Hillary Clinton was five points up. This is the first time in more than 20 years that a Republican president has been up in this part of the campaign.”
Bennet in the interview did not call for Biden to step down, instead saying, “this is something for the president really to consider, and I believe that those of us that are in these elected offices have a moral obligation to the people that we represent and the future of our country … to do everything that we can to make sure their future is as bright as it can be.”
The Biden campaign has been dealing with the fallout from what’s widely been viewed as a poor performance by the president during last month’s debate with Trump. Biden has said he will remain in the race despite growing doubts from within his party, The Center Square previously reported.
New polling released on Tuesday by Emerson College found Trump has 46% support, while Biden has 43% and 11% of voters are undecided.
