Colorado has over $2 billion in unclaimed property

(The Center Square) – Colorado has over $2 billion in unclaimed property that it owes to millions of individuals.

The funds are held by the Great Colorado Payback, the Colorado Department of Treasury’s program tasked with reuniting unclaimed funds with their owners.

“With rising prices for groceries and other essentials, a lot of us are looking for extra cash these days,” State Treasurer Dave Young said in a statement for Unclaimed Property Day, which is Saturday. “Luckily, missing money may be right under your nose! I urge all Coloradans to recover their unpaid wages, uncashed checks, and other unclaimed property through the Great Colorado Payback.”

According to the department, there were 75,000 claims last year that resulted in $78 million returned in Colorado.

“To streamline the process, the department’s unclaimed property division now automatically returns some claims without additional paperwork,” the Treasury Department said.
