Day 41: Shutdown Toll Leaves Americans Unsafe

(AURN News) — The fallout from the Department of Homeland Security funding lapse is creating chaos across the nation’s security infrastructure.

The shutdown has now reached day 41, with no deal in sight between Democrats and Republicans.

At the Transportation Security Administration, nearly 480 security officers have quit. Airport security lines have reached historic highs, with wait times exceeding four and a half hours at major hubs. Callout rates are hitting 40% to 50% at some airports, while assaults on TSA officers have increased by more than 500%. All of this is happening as officers continue to work without pay.

The Coast Guard has furloughed 75% of its civilian specialists. Service members have now missed three paychecks, while ships sitting in maintenance yards across the country remain idle.

As Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked, 260,000 federal workers are still unpaid — raising concerns about national security.
