(The Center Square) – Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo on Sunday conceded to challenger Gabe Evans in the race for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, flipping the seat to Republicans.
Caraveo currently has 159,426 votes to Evans’ 162,022 votes, according to unofficial results from the Colorado secretary of state’s office.
Caraveo, a doctor who was first elected to Congress last year, thanked her constituents in a statement.
“I came to Congress to get things done, and have spent the last two years working to find common ground and bipartisan solutions to the most pressing issues facing our community,” she said.
Evans, a state representative, thanked Caraveo for her “gracious concession.”
“It is an honor to be entrusted with the job of representing you and your families, and I am ready to fight back for a better direction for all Coloradans,” he said.
The district covers the Denver suburbs of Adams County, and parts of Weld and Larimer counties. The Cook Political Report rated the race as a “Democratic Toss Up.”
