Democrats react to Trump policies, promise disruptions

(The Center Square) – Colorado Democrats continue to push back against the Trump administration and many of President Donald Trump’s actions since he took office, stating they’ll use “every tool” to disrupt his actions.

Those disruptions have included multiple lawsuits by Colorado’s Attorney General Phil Weiser, a Democrat running for governor in 2026.

The most recent of those lawsuits was announced on Monday, when Weiser joined 21 other attorneys general to sue the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Institutes of Health for unlawfully cutting funds for medical and public health research at universities and research institutions across the country.

“We have world-class medical research in Colorado that has transformed healthcare and improved countless lives,” Weiser said Monday. “This illegal action cutting NIH funding — taken abruptly, recklessly, without reflecting on its painful impact and with no justification for a dramatic change — will harm Colorado universities, undermine important research efforts and damage our economy.”

U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colorado, has been very outspoken against Trump.

“The moment is now to use every tool at our disposal to disrupt the Trump Administration’s brazen attempts to push the legal limits of Presidential power even further,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Hickenlooper has responded to Trump initiatives with legislation, joining other Democratic lawmakers in sponsoring a Senate bill that would restrict U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and Customs and Border Protection agents from conducting arrests in schools, hospitals or churches. Trump recently removed a previous restriction on those locations.

U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colorado, has pushed back against everything from Trump’s “takeover of Greenland” to his executive orders.

“Two-thirds of Americans do not think President Trump is focused enough on lowering costs,” Crow said. “His executive orders aren’t doing a damn thing to make a carton of eggs cheaper. In fact, his tariffs (tax increases) will raise costs.”

Some Colorado Democrats have supported various Trump initiatives, though. Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, is one of those, supporting Trump’s recently-announced elimination of the penny.

“Eliminating the penny will help save people money and support our environment, since producing them leads to poorer air quality and large extractions of key minerals,” Polis said in response to Trump’s announcement. “Let’s take this step to save taxpayer money, meet the needs of consumers and better protect our environment.”’
