(The Center Square)- The city of Denver has released a how-to guide for cities nationwide that have been hit with an influx of migrants, and the costs that are associated with them.

City budgets have taken massive hits since the influx of migrants, with Denver alone spending over $72 million and sheltering over 42,000 migrants, according to the June 17 newcomer update.

“This intervention is cost-saving,” states the document. The document goes on to say the average cost of moving the 171 families assisted from October 2023 through January 2024 was $3,011 per family.

That’s over $500,000 spent solely on moving families.

The Newcomers Playbook: A guide to welcoming newcomers into our city” offers a 15-step cheat sheet on how the city can provide shelter, among other services, while covering how much it costs to accommodate those who have entered the U.S. illegally or otherwise for essential services.

The guide states, “In its current form, it serves as a framework for supporting new arrivals in your city.”

The book also covers onward travel to other cities, offering only temporary shelter, assistance finding stable housing, mental and medical resources, legal aid, school enrollment, work authorization, and more.

Denver has been encouraging migrants to move to cities with more resources. As previously reported by The Center Square, the city had sent two Denver employees to El Paso to meet with organizations and let newly arriving migrants know that Denver is no longer a long-term destination.
