Disney’s Snow White Remake Makes an Impression

The fairest of all films is here! Disney’s Snow White is the upcoming live-action adaptation of the 1937 animated classic, directed by Marc Webb, with Rachel Zegler in the titular role alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The princess is forced into the forest after her stepmother, the Evil Queen, takes control of her parents’ kingdom. Snow White meets the seven dwarfs, and together they come up with a plan to win her kingdom back. Andrew Burnap also stars in the film as Snow White’s newly minted love interest. As part of Disney’s ongoing trend of reimagining their animated classics for modern audiences, this film promises a fresh take on the beloved fairytale while sparking significant discussion ahead of its release.

The original Snow White depicts the very first Disney Princess, the pioneer of the franchise, is the embodiment of innocence and beauty. Following the more traditional damsel-in-distress narrative, the remake presents a more empowered Snow White. A strong focus on our heroine’s leadership skills and independence rather than her search for a prince. Disney’s broader attempt to modernize its princess stories, however, created much more conversation than they hoped.

The casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, generated both praise and backlash, with supporters celebrating increased representation while critics argue that it deviates from the traditional depiction. Similarly, the decision to reimagine the seven dwarfs with CGI has drawn mixed reactions, with Disney aiming to avoid outdated portrayals. Regardless of public opinion, Zegler shines as a princess, she leads the film with the perfect amount of grace and a clear, strong voice to match.  The musical numbers have been slightly altered from the classics we remember, but she sings with ease, capturing the screen in a most compelling way. On the other hand, Gadot’s portrayal of an Evil Queen is intriguing. While the character can’t be down right scary- it is a children’s film after all – she makes an intensely campy villain. Unfortunately, Gadot’s acting is neither frightening nor convincing, and it fails to hold up against her counterparts.

The film has faced many controversies, from casting decisions to concerns over political correctness in adapting a nearly 90-year-old story. Some fans worry that the changes stray too far from the original, while others appreciate the attempt to bring Snow White into the modern era. The debate underscores the challenge Disney faces in balancing legacy with progress. As Disney continues its live-action remake strategy, Snow White stands as one of the most debated entries yet. Whether it succeeds will depend on if viewers are willing. With a talented cast, a fresh perspective, and high expectations, Snow White is poised to be one of the most talked-about films of 2025.
