DOJ accuses Alaska doctor of $10 million in health care fraud

(The Center Square) – An Alaska doctor and her husband are facing federal charges for allegedly filing $10 million in false health care claims, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Rheumatologist Claribel Tan operated a medical clinic in Anchorage along with her husband, Daniel Tan, according to the DOJ. They are accused of misrepresenting the type and dosages of medication given to their patients and creating false medical records.

The two received more than $10 million in fraudulent funds, and $8.5 million was seized by the DOJ from the Tan’s accounts, according to a news release.

The Tans are also accused of providing false tax records in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and not filing taxes from 2018 to 2021, the DOJ said.

The couple is charged with one count of health care fraud and four counts of failure to file a tax return. Claribel Tan is also charged with three counts of attempting to evade and defeat tax, while Daniel Tan faces four counts.

Health care fraud has a maximum sentence of 10 years of prison per count. The maximum sentence for tax evasion is five years and failing to file a tax return has a maximum one year sentence per count.
