Eddie Murphy’s “Harlem Nights” Turns 35

(AURN News) — On this day in 1989, November 17, Eddie Murphy’s “Harlem Nights” hit theaters. Written, directed by and starring Murphy, the film was a rare moment in Hollywood, a major studio comedy led by multiple generations of Black legends.
Murphy teamed up with Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx — in what would be Foxx’s last film appearance before his death in 1991 — the incomparable Della Reese and Murphy’s older brother, Charlie.
Set in 1930s Harlem, the movie blended mob drama, sharp comedy and unapologetic Black glamour.
But despite its powerhouse cast, critics panned “Harlem Nights” at the time, calling it uneven and dismissing Murphy’s directorial debut.
Decades later, the culture decided differently.
The film is now embraced as a classic , a bold, stylish showcase of Black comedic royalty at their peak.
